Password Safety Tips

  1. Never share or write your password in a piece of paper or in a file in plain text. Use a password manager to store passwords;
  2. Use passphrases: a type of strong password that uses a short sentence or random words; the more characters you have the better. Here are a few examples: These are strong, easy to remember, and simple to type but difficult to crack
  3. Never create passwords that include easily obtained personal information about themselves (e.g., names of family members, pets, birthdays, anniversaries, hobbies)
  4. Never change passwords in an easily recognized pattern (e.g., changing “IL0v3EatingP!zza1” to “IL0v3EatingP!zza2”)
  5. Never use the same password for all accounts (e.g. MyChart account, e-mail account, personal banking, etc.)
  6. Change password immediately if you suspect password compromise.
