Password Safety Tips
- Never share or write your password in a piece of paper or in a file in plain text. Use a password manager to store passwords;
- Use passphrases: a type of strong password that uses a short sentence or random words; the more characters you have the better. Here are a few examples:
- Time for strong coffee!
- lost-snail-crawl-beach
- IL0v3EatingP!zza
These are strong, easy to remember, and simple to type but difficult to crack
- Never create passwords that include easily obtained personal information about themselves (e.g., names of family members, pets, birthdays, anniversaries, hobbies)
- Never change passwords in an easily recognized pattern (e.g., changing “IL0v3EatingP!zza1” to “IL0v3EatingP!zza2”)
- Never use the same password for all accounts (e.g. MyChart account, e-mail account, personal banking, etc.)
- Change password immediately if you suspect password compromise.
